About Back Pain During Pregnancy in Q&A
How do women handle back pain during pregnancy? I'm just curious how other women handle back pain during pregnancy. I am signed up for a prenatal yoga class and got a maternity pillow. Is there anything else that I can do? thanks.

rollergirl515 replied: "I laid on a heating pad as much as possible for my back pain."

Did you have a back pain during your pregnancy and still have epidural? if you had a back pain during pregnancy and especially in late pregnancy and had leg cramps (numb leg) is it safe to have epidural when giving birth?

lornielor1984 replied: "not sure how safe it is but i had it and assumed it was totally safe? check with ur midwife or doc if u are not sure whether to have epidural, but personally i would recommend it"

lostlittlefaireyonearth24 replied: "i did, they told me it was safe and that i would be just fine to have one. so i don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to but i would check with your doctor to make sure."

Anybody have excruciating back pain or cramps during early pregnancy? I've read a lot about mild cramping and lower back pain during pregnancy, but has anyone else had lying on the bathroom floor crying, screaming obscenities at the top of your lungs back pain? I'm probably only 4 wks along, no spotting or bleeding or anything. It comes & goes, I'm doing pretty good most of the time but every few hours it'll hit and I'm curled up into a little ball for 10-15 minutes till it subsides. I have an appt Tues with a midwife; I called her a few days ago and she talked a bit about miscarriage but never really said that's what's going on, just wanted me to be aware that 25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. She's pretty anti-med and discouraged Tylenol, though I have cheated and taken it when the pain gets really bad (doesn't seem to help though). Been using ice packs on my back (hope that's ok?), heating pad seemed to make it worse. Just made my poor hubby go get stool softener, though I don't think that's the problem either. Any advice, is this normal?

livelovelaugh replied: "i would really go and get checked to make sure its not a tubal pregnancy dont mean to worry you and hope all is well best of luck"

hayley replied: "um that's not normal you need to go and see your doctor i am 6 weeks and only get mild pain"

chrysteena replied: "i had really really bad back pain in early pregnancy... it was sooo bad that (before we suspected pregnancy) everyone thought i might have had a pinched nerve or something... it did get better as time went on..... congrats ... good luck... and i hope you feel better soon.... *pretty soon you're back pain will come from being bent over the toilet all day... LoL....."

TailKinker replied: "I had something similiar - I am now 8 months pregnant. However, I had similiar symptoms when i was not pregnant, and they have not been diagnosed as anything because they are not regular enough - mine were once a night every two to three months, but had it every few nights when i was first pregnant, as well as tiny bits of spotting. However, mine was more in the lower front abdomen and not the back. Either way, it sounds like your intestines, especially because the uterus grows forward and you are feeling it in your back. I found that laying on my side in the bathtub with slightly cool - room temp shower running over me from the shoulders down helped a lot. Try that, and if you want to, email me tailkinker42 at yahoo.com. Not sure what help i can be, because as i've already mentioned, whatever has plagued me happens when i'm not pregnant and has not been diagnosed, but i can listen. Helen"

nikki r replied: "From the sounds of what you're explaining, it kinda sounds like you may have a kidney stone. I had one, not while I was pregnant, but it's VERY bad pains in your lower stomach & lower back that will come & go. I had no idea what it was before & thought maybe it was just gas pains so bought some Gas-x & it didn't help. Went to the ER & found out I did have a kidney stone. That's really the only thing I could think of that fits your description. I don't think it has anything to do with miscarriage otherewise you would probably be bleeding. But I would definitely get to see a doctor or go to the ER if it still hurts by tomorrow."

jose migel replied: "That happened to me a few times after sex when I was around 5 weeks and wasn't even really sure If I was pregnant it was really strange and I didn't know what it was- I now know that- that is what a contraction feels like. I can't even describe the feeling. It felt like a huge boulder was going to try to come out. It happened only a few times and I never curled up I would jump and then fall it was pretty crazy thinking back on it. I never even thought about going to the drs I just thought I was getting sick or something. Knowing what I know now though I would have gone to the Dr. right away- or atleast called."

How to ease back pain during pregnancy? I am 27 weeks pregnant... I know that the weight of the baby is causing most of my problems but is there something I can do to ease off some of the pain besides Tylenol? I am having pain in my lower back. When I stand, or roll over (if I had been lying down) my lower back pops. Any suggestions?

MaryRose replied: "You can do something called pelvic rocking. It's hard for me to describe the movement necessary, but they do a pretty good job here:"

edan0705 replied: "I would say lay down or ask your doctor whats the best thing you should do."

How can I help my back pain during pregnancy? My back pain is so bad. Especially my lower back and along my spin. I have a congested head and it is so hard to breathe! HELP!

Bubbles replied: "For a congested head, I have heard of humidifiers working. Try not to use nasal sprays or anything of that sort. For your lower back, try a massage or a heating pad. I do not think any creams like hot and cold should be used, but to make sure you should talk to your doctor about it just in case you can. Good Luck!"

CJ SWEETNESS replied: "Try a heating pad for your back, it really helps me... Also of course you can take Tylenol but not much else. As for your congestion you should get a humidifier and sleep with it on and use the VICKS liquid that you put in it, that should really clear your sinuses!"

Lucians Mommy replied: "Hi Kate... I would suggest a body pillow for sleeping...I used one from Babies R Us called the Snoogle (link below), It really helped me. I would also make sure that you are wearing proper footwear. I would also suggest wearing really supportive sneakers. Brand name running shoes were my choice...Asics are super comfortable and cushioned. If you work...ask your supervisor for permission to wear them if they are against your dress code. If they say no...ask your Obgyn for a note. On the body pillow...they are expensive but worth it. If you cannot budget it...use a thick pillow between your knees when sleeping. This will help align your spine better. Hope this helps...good luck and enjoy your pregnancy."

Henning9 replied: "I know as a I am a man you may be skeptic, but try this. NEVER sleep or even lie down on your back! Your stomach will press your lower back flat on the bed, this cause the pain you feel. Also the suggestions for good supportive shoes and hot support while lying on your side. You may also try sleeping on an inflatable mattress that are not totally hard. Inflate it but leave it a little lax so it can easily shape to the contour of your body and give more support. You can even put a thin inflatable on your current mattress. Sleeping on your side should hopefully leave at least one nostril open as well. Best of luck, it is only for whatever is left of the 9 months. Just tell yourself "this too shall pass!""

How should i deal with back pain during pregnancy? Im pregnant and i am starting to get horrible back pain. I was told i shouldnt use bengay because it contains silicates and i shouldnt use heating pads because it might overheat my body temp, which would overheat the baby. EDD: Sep. 14th replied: "You can take Tylenol. And what works for me is taking a warm bath. Try to relax, If you sit alot during the day try walking more frequently or get up and stretch. But if you are on your feet most of the day then sit down frequently and elevate your feet. Good Luck! Back pain sux horribly!!!!"

JustCurious replied: "Check with your health care provider or check online for professional help. I checked online before, and found excellent help at low cost (you paid per question). A question about back pain during pregnancy? I was curious what the back pain was like? When you talk of lower back pain, is it a muscular thing or bone, like right next to your spine? Is it all over or in one small spot? I have some back pain, it's in my very lower back, right to the right of my spine, it's not a sharp pain or anything, it's just discomfort. I was curious if that could be related to pregnancy?

Angelica P replied: "Yes,I went through that when I had my son."

Whittney Burke replied: "Yes it is usally just a discomfort achy feeling caused mainly from your hips spreading!"

prego lady! replied: "Back pain or discomfort is common during pregnancy and should be expected to some degree by most women. Back pain may be experienced during any point of your pregnancy; however, it most commonly occurs later in the pregnancy as the weight of the baby increases. Back pain can disrupt your daily routine or interfere with a good night of sleep. so Goodluck!"

What can you do to help back pain during pregnancy? I'm 33 weeks pregnant and recently been having more back pain then before and it's mainly on my right side. Please give me some advice!! To Cynthia: What does any of that have to do with back pain?

RoadRunner replied: "Heating Pads they have ones that last 8 hours!"

Being Induced June 10th!! replied: "Heating Pads, make sure not to place it on your abdomin."

mommy720 replied: "Get on your hands and knees and arch your back and then tuck your tummy... mainly what your doing are pelvic tilts but it takes a lot of pressure off your back and it helps put baby in the right position as well. Congrats! Only a few more weeks!"

Cynthia replied: "Dont listen to Roadrunn.....that is a wrong answer...........do tummy tucks, or use tums........make warm tea and burp......or fart. It sounds nasty but being pregnant u r very gassy and it become more uncomfortable the bigger u get. take a warm bath.......and do tummy tucks in the bath. to get the air bubble to move so u can either burp or fart."

waiting on baby replied: "my doctor told me to take tylonel as directed"

Does anyone have lower back pain during pregnancy and after the baby is born? When I was 4 months pregnant I started having this lower back pain on the right side. Every time I would take a step and put pressure on the right leg, I would get that sharp pain. It didn't happen all the time but I would never know when it was going to happen. Well now my son is 3 1/2 months old and I still get that pain!!!! Has anyone had this problem?

babyMAMA replied: "Its definatley your sciatica!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have the same problem!!!!!!"

lb replied: "sure pain thats last nerve pinch"

April replied: "Mine hurt from about 5 months on with all three. I am pregnant now and this time he is laying on a nerve and causing my hip to hurt bad. The pain didn't let up for about 6 months after having the first 2. Good luck!"

Remember What The Doorman Said replied: "I had it while I was pregnant, doctors told me it was because he was pushing down on a nerve or something. Im not a doctor, but maybe he could've damaged your nerver? Go to your doctor, they should be able to tell you for sure. Good luck!"

My thoughts replied: "In this case this pain may not be caused by pregnancy, or may be something has gone wrong during pregnancy.......i ll meet the physician for such a problem"

ilymicahj replied: "I've always had back pain and its not getting worse now that I'm pregnant so I would guess during my pregnancy i havnt had any back pain yet !!"

dylash77 replied: "My baby is 7 mos. & I still get pains & popping in my hip sockets too! Ouch!!! Go to a Chiropractor, it really helps. I can't go since he's been born due to no more insurance. : ("
